Sailrocket 10th Anniversary. Out she comes and good to go!
2022 will mark the 10th anniversary of Sailrocket 2's still current outright world speed sailing record.
The team figured this was something worth celebrating... and that the boat itself should attend. Although the actual records were broken in November in 2012, it seemed only right to get Sailrocket 2 out of her 40' shipping container a little earlier and rig her up during the 50th anniversary of Weymouth Speed Week (starting October 15th).
Sailrocket 2 has never sailed anywhere else but In Namibia... and not since the day she set her last, fastest and still current record (November 24th, 2012). Very few people have actually seen this boat in action including many members of her own team. The Portland Harbour course is too short and crowded for her to be sailed at her full potential so the aim is simply to try and get her on the water to showcase what is involved in sailing her in a safe manner down the course.
It remains unclear whether the team will actually be able to go sailing on the much busier and more restricted Portland Harbour. Sailrocket also needs very specific weather conditions to operate in. Many stars need to align to actually allow her to sail down the course but she is being fully prepared to do so if such an opportunity does arise. Either way, Sailrocket 2 and the team will be on standby for sailing in front of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy from the 15th until the 17th of October.
History info:
On the 24th of November 2012, Walvis Bay Namibia. On the 3rd run of the day, Australian Paul Larsen piloted the UK designed and built Vestas Sailrocket 2 to a new Outright speed sailing World record of 65.45 knots average over the 500 metre course. During the run VSR2 hit a peak speed of 68.33 knots (78.6 mph). The average wind speed was 27 knots. This performance represented the culmination of over 11 years of work. The concept had been proven and the physical "limits" (imposed by the phenomenon of cavitation) had been overcome. Sailing had reached its supersonic era. To date no other boat has come close.

65 knot + Rocket Ride Anniversary edit.

With so many people asking "what is it like" to sail this boat at this speed, we thought it was time to do a more 'pure' edit of our fastest, final incredible run. This run shows Vestas Sailrocket 2 absolutely smashing the outright world speed sailing record and easily becoming the sports first true 60 knot boat. She averaged 65.45 knots over the 500 meter course and hit a peak speed of 68.33 k...

Here is a very unique view of our record run. It's the complete birds-eye view footage of Vestas Sailrocket 2 nailing the Outright world speed sailing record on the 24th of November, 2012. We had discussed the possibility of getting aerial shots for many years. The trouble is that there are no helicopters stationed anywhere around Walvis Bay in Namibia. The fact that we are sailing in cross-win...
Blown Away. VESTAS Sailrocket 2 truly smashes the Outright world speed sailing record*

24th of November,2012. This is the day that VESTAS Sailrocket 2 took speed sailing into a whole new era. Having already broken the existing Outright world speed sailing record by the biggest margin in the records history a little over a week earlier, the team took to the waters of Walvis Bay in strong winds to try and be the first to take the sport over the 60 knot average mark. This video show...

Two days after finally smashing the Outright world speed sailing record, the Vestas Sailrocket 2 team decide to tackle the 'Nautical Mile' world record which was held by the mighty 'Hydroptere'. It was always going to be an interesting challenge for the VSR2 team as the speed course that they sail on in Walvis Bay, Namibia is defined by a beach which is exactly 1.04 miles long. This requires th...

With the modifcations made to the new foil on VESTAS Sailrocket 2 working so well in light winds, the team were keen to see if they would translate to high speeds. VSR2 had constantly been hitting a 'glass ceiling' around 52 knots despite the fact that she was designed to do well over 60. This is the day when theory turned into reality and the team got to see speeds they could only dare dream a...

The team at VESTAS Sailrocket are trying to work out why they keep hitting a limiting speed around 52 knots. The team are using a highly innovative concept to try and set the outright world speed sailing record. They think that their limit is being caused by too much drag on the foils rather than not enough power in the wing. This video gives an insight into the teams activities whilst they are...

You would have the wrong impression to think that all your days will be full of high speed sailing action in a speed sailing project. There is a lot of waiting involved. You are at the mercy of the wind gods even in prolific places like Walvis Bay. Some times you think it's never going to come... a week later you think it's never going to stop. When it blows, the days can be long and relentless...

On only her 4th run with her new foil package, VESTAS Sailrocket 2 posted her personal best time of 50.98 knots over a 500 meter course with a peak speed of 53 knots. Whilst the team is still dialling in the boat, these times are unofficial (not ratified by the WSSRC who govern the sport). Nonetheless, the speeds would comfortably surpass the current Australian record for Larsen as well as his ...

A little idea of one of speed sailings biggest issues... finding ideal conditions. The VESTAS Sailrocket team are in Walvis Bay, Namibia because of its consistently ideal conditions and yet patience is still one of a speed sailing teams biggest requirements. I don't understand, why don't you foil it? you want less friction, hydrofoil it, with self leveling software, servos, to prevent exiting the water, stay level, and fly beyond your craziest nightmares! you still have a huge contact surface with the water, and with foil you also smooth out the ride, because man, you're getting shaken savagely, seriously!

I’d like to think a kitefoil rider could go as fast, but I think the limiting factor would be how much force the sailor could transmit from the kite to the foil, through their harness, arms, legs and feet. That’s something Mr. Larsen did not have to deal with, which in no way diminishes the accomplishment.

    2:36. Isn't it called cavitation?

    • @cillianwilliamson16
      @cillianwilliamson16 Рік тому

It's kind of a technicality. Cavitation is usually associated with fully submerged foils. Ventilation happens on foils near the surface or more commonly on surface piercing foils, when air is sucked down to the low pressure side of foils. The dynamic pressure of the liquid drops low enough below atmospheric pressure, sucking air and causing an air cavity. Regular Cavitation happens when the dynamic pressure on the foil drops below the vapour of the fluid which essentially boils a forms a vapour cavity.

I think the foil went from being side ventilated... and thus effectively skidding/planing solely on the high pressure surface to being "wetted" on both surfaces and base ventilated (as designed). This latter mode generates lift on both surfaces and thus "skids" less. The foil bit in. You can actually see the spray pattern change in the overhead view. We included all the interesting bits in this very specific edit... as I use it for talks to highlight the key points:) I hadn't seen or felt the boat do this before. I had to make a large correction to the wheel when it happened (Highly geared steering).
